Apple said iPhone Game Mode will instantly switch on when a game is begun instead of requiring a toggle.
On Monday, Apple announced that the iPhone will get a major gaming feature previously available on Mac. Apple Park hosted WWDC 2024, where the tech giant previewed iOS 18, the next iPhone OS. The keynote focused on phone customization and Apple Intelligence, but Apple also revealed Game Mode for the iPhone.
Game Mode on iPhone
Apple claims Game Mode on iOS 18 will improve gaming by maintaining constant frame rates. This may be beneficial during long gaming sessions. Apple claims the dedicated gaming mode minimizes iPhone background activities to enable “high frame rates for hours of continuous gameplay” from the CPU and GPU.
Game Mode debuted on Mac at WWDC 2023 in June and is now on iPhone. Apple says AirPods minimize audio latency, and PlayStation and Xbox Bluetooth controllers have lower input latency, making them more responsive. Apple says, “This means consistent performance without lag or slowdowns, no matter how long you play.”
Mac Game Mode works with new and old games. It is uncertain if the iPhone does the same. Instead of having to toggle it, Apple says this feature turns on when a game starts.
Apple also showed off Personalised Spatial Audio in Game Mode with iOS 18 for an enhanced audio experience when playing Need for Speed Mobile, although it only works with AirPods Pro (2nd generation).
AAA iPhone games
Along with the gaming features, Apple announced a list of AAA iPhone games coming soon. On July 2, iPhone, iPad, and Mac will get Resident Evil 7 Biohazard first. Resident Evil 2 is also in development for Apple devices.
Apple also released Mac versions of Sniper Elite 4, Dead Island 2, Control: Ultimate Edition, Frostpunk 2, Valheim, and Palword. iPhone availability is unknown. It will also port Assassin’s Creed: Shadows to iPad with Ubisoft.
