In our evaluation from the previous year, the second-generation HomePod received a strong 84 points for having richer and clearer sound than products from Google and Amazon. Though it works best with iPhones, Apple TVs, and other company products and services like Apple Music, it’s truly solely intended for Apple users.
Now is the perfect moment to get Apple’s HomePod (2nd generation), as it is now available for $175 at Verizon. That’s one of the greatest prices we’ve seen on the smart speaker to date, and it saves a whopping $125 (42 per cent). Furthermore, Verizon is selling the HomePod Mini for $150, 25% less than the retail price.
It can be used as a smart home device to operate an increasing number of smart home accessories, such as plugs, security cameras, thermostats, and other devices because it is compatible with Matter and Thread on top of Apple’s HomeKit protocol. It also includes integrated sensors for humidity and temperature, and its built-in microphones are good at picking up your voice over background noise.
While the Sonos Era 100 is typically a bit better value, speakers like the Sonos Five and Sonos Era 300 are more expensive but provide slightly better sound (users of Google Assistant and Amazon Echo should search elsewhere). Furthermore, Siri isn’t the most competent assistant, and there isn’t Bluetooth audio. But if you’ve been eyeing one, the second-generation HomePod is a great deal at $175.
Verizon is also offering a “buy one, get the second one half off” bargain on the HomePod Mini if you don’t require the HomePod’s sound quality (two for $150). That will allow you to stock a few bedrooms or purchase a stereo set. If that’s your primary worry, it has almost all the same smart home functions as the Echo Dot and Google Home Mini, but with better sound quality.
